Recently I've developed an interest in generative art, meaning art produced via algorithmic means (to some extent any piece of art can be said to be produced via algorithmic means; I am interested at the moment in cases in which the algorithm is relatively clearly conceptualized). An interesting tool for realizing this type of art is the pen plotter, which is just a device that can hold a writing implement and move in two dimensions according to (in the case of the one I own) an svg file. This device allows the combination of the mechanical qualities of precision and repetition with the materiality of actual ink, paint, or other physical substances.
